Playing Away

About the Project...

The “Playing Away” programme is a tried and tested means of raising levels of confidence and self-esteem among perhaps your most disaffected pupils. Through non threatening role-play situations the project covers many difficult issues that can affect today’s teenagers such as Teenage Pregnancy and Sexually Transmitted Infections, the social implications of Car Crime and Crime in general, Drugs and Substance Abuse, Bullying, Racial Prejudice and Anti-social Behaviour. They will be shown how to channel their anger in positive ways and develop coping strategies for difficult situations.

The project is open to a maximum of 5 schools each term. Due to its popularity, priority will be given to those schools who have not worked with us before.

The tailored drama programme is facilitated by Clare Molyneux over a full term - one lesson per week. The first half term’s work focuses on the personal development of individual pupils, and how they work as part of a team.  Confidence and self esteem are built throughout the project, as the pupils conquer what may seem, at first, unimaginable tasks, such as; speaking in public, giving and receiving instructions sensibly amongst peers, talking about their feelings and the consequences of their actions. During the second half-term, pupils will use all of the skills they have learned to devise and ultimately perform a short play about issues pertinent to them, affording them the opportunity to feel the consequences of negative behaviour on the wider community first hand. Participation in the performance gives the pupils and enormous sense of accomplishment.

Self-motivation and motivating others is important in the workplace and can be learnt though our vocal, physical and mental warm ups. The students have fun whilst learning new skills. Role-play gives the students a chance to explore themselves, their own feelings and the feelings of others.

On completion of the course students receive gold, silver or bronze attainment certificates from Liverpool Compact EBP.

Feedback...

“I thought I would hate the project, but it was great. We had a good laugh and learned a lot. I’m not as shy now and I realise that if I put my mind to it I can achieve anything"

- Aiden, Student at The Key Stage 4 Centre

“...exceptionally good at working with all ability ranges to give them a sense of worth and achievement. I cannot recommend this programme highly enough for motivating pupils to succeed"

- Claire Heslop, Holly Lodge Girls’ College

Booking...

Although the full cost of the project is £888 it is “match funded” by a grant from the European Union’s Employability Fund reducing the cost for the school to £444 per term.
